As we finish our journey through the Desert Wanderings, Fr. WEB zeroes in on the purpose of the city of refuge. These cities were established by God as a place of safety for those who had accidentally killed someone. The cities provided a place where the accused could be protected from the avenger of blood, who was responsible for carrying out the death penalty for murder.
The cities of refuge were a reminder of God's mercy and justice. They showed that even in the midst of sin and violence, there was still hope for redemption. The cities provided a place where the guilty could find forgiveness and a new beginning.
Today, the cities of refuge can still serve as a reminder of God's mercy and grace. They remind us that even when we have sinned, we are not beyond redemption. God is always willing to forgive us and give us a new chance.
